What is Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?

 

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is the specialty that deals with diseases and conditions affecting the oral cavity and its surrounding maxillofacial structures. These include the teeth, jaw bones (including the jaw joints) and soft tissues (mucosa, muscles and glands). It used to be called Oral Surgery.

 

OMS procedures include the followings:

 

* Surgery for buried teeth and impacted wisdom teeth;

* Surgery for dental cysts / jaw tumours / oral cancer;

* Surgical management of dental  / oro-facial infections;

* Apical surgery (Apico-ectomy);

* Surgery for dental implants and facial implants;

* Surgery for correction of jaw discrepancy, also known as orthognathic surgery  (to correct long and short jaws, and facial asymmetry);

  

* Management of jaw fractures;

* Reconstruction of jaw bones / bone grafting / distraction osteogenesis;

* Management of jaw joint (TMJ) diseases and dysfunction / pain;

        TMD (Tempero-Mandibular Diseases).
